National Construction Association Chairman Susantha Liyanaarachchi said that 5 companies have received permits to import cement, even though there is an excess stocks in the country.
He further stated that three local companies are currently engaged in manufacturing cement and importation would cause a threat of closing down operations.
However, he added that imported cement is Rs. 2700 while the local cement is Rs. 3200, and requested the authorities to intervene to bring the price of local cement to the same level.
