‘Several steps taken to resolve fuel crisis faced by tourism industry’ – Minister Harin

Aug 07, Colombo: Minister of Tourism Harin Fernando says several measures have been taken to resolve the fuel crisis that directly affected the tourism industry.

Speaking during an event in Aluthgama, Minister Fernando said they are working towards reserving 10 filling stations across the island for people engaged in the tourism sector to get fuel.

A meeting organized by Golden Mile Tourism Collective, who operate in the tourism industry based in and around Beruwala and Bentota, was held yesterday evening.

The Minister mentioned that due to the collapse of the tourism sector in the face of the crisis, the people who did business related to the industry faced severe hardships.

Minister Harin Fernando further mentioned that measures such as giving them a grace period to pay their debts have already been taken.

The Minister said there were many requests for the debt repayment moratorium which concluded in June to be extended, adding they were able to extend it until the 31st of December.

The Minister said a productive discussion ensued with regard to issues faced by the community and the solutions for the same.

It was decided that a committee will be appointed, which will look into sorting out the matters pointed out, and they’ll meet each month to resolve the issues step-by-step, the Minister said.

Former State Minister Piyal Nishantha also took part in this meeting.
