* Agriculture Minister concerned over the future of the poultry industry

Sept 24, Colombo: Minister of Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation, Mahinda Amaraweera has expressed concern over the future of the poultry industry in the country as the economic crisis is severely affecting the production of chicken and eggs.
The Minister of Agriculture chaired a review meeting on the progress of the Peradeniya Animal Production and Health Department on Friday and discussed the future development of Sri Lanka’s liquid milk industry and egg and poultry industry.
State Minister of Agriculture Mohan de Silva and the Director of that department, Dr. Mrs. KACHC Kotelawala also participated in the meeting.
During the meeting it was revealed that although Sri Lanka has reached self-sufficiency in poultry industry related products, poultry meat and egg production sector in the past, with the current economic crisis, the increase in the price of materials and medicines used for animal feed has severely impacted the production.
It was stated that the decrease in the amount of mother animals required for poultry management from 80,000 to 10,000 has also had a great impact.
The Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera said measures will be taken to prepare a cabinet paper in order to draw the attention of the cabinet of Ministers to prepare a short-term, medium-term and long-term program as a government to prevent the deteriorating situation.
In order to improve the nutritional conditions of the people of Sri Lanka, the production of liquid milk, eggs and chicken should be increased and the program of producing maize and soy used for animal feed in the country will be started from this season, the minister said.
“We cannot be happy with the current situation regarding the production of chicken meat and eggs in our country. Therefore, a program should be prepared to prevent the collapse of this industry as soon as possible,” the Minister said.
The minister also mentioned that since the quality of chicken meat and eggs in Sri Lanka is of the highest quality, if those products are raised, it is possible to earn dollars in a short period of 45 days.
