July 30, Colombo: The Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage stated at a recent progress review meeting in the Ampara District that he is ready to implement a systematic program to produce 38,903 metric tons of organic fertilizer.

He noted that 330,000 acres are cultivated in the Ampara District during the two Yala and Maha seasons and the farmers of Ampara district contribute 22% to the country’s national paddy production.

Cowpea is also cultivated in the Ampara District with a contribution of 40% to the national production.

In addition, the contribution of the farmers of Ampara to many agricultural products including maize and chilies is immense.

The Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage who participated in the discussion stated that the necessary facilities will be provided to the farming community for organic farming during the Maha season.

The Minister also observed the large scale organic fertilizer production project of Ampara Gal Oya Plantation Company.

State Minister of Agriculture Shasheendra Rajapaksa, State Minister of Wildlife Wimalaweera Dissanayake and Members of Parliament from the Ampara District also participated in the observation tour.

The Minister observed the production process of all the organic fertilizer required for the sugarcane plantations owned by the Gal Oya Plantation Company.

The Gal Oya Plantation Company produces 7500 metric tons of organic fertilizer per annum using 100% of all waste and components discharged from the factory. A special feature is that the company provides 25 kg of organic fertilizer produced in this manner to farmers at a reasonable price of Rs. 275.

In addition to organic compost manure, Gal Oya Plantation Company manufactures a number of very successful products including organic liquid manure and bio-fertilizer.

Gal Oya Plantation Company is already successfully cultivating sugarcane using organic fertilizer.

Although the company currently produces organic fertilizer for its farmers, it expects to increase production for the national interest of the island, said Gal Oya Plantations Chief Operating Officer MMD Surath Perera said.

The large scale organic fertilizer program of Gal Oya Plantation Company can be seen as a great example against the massive propaganda that it cannot be cultivated without chemical fertilizers and chemical liquids, the Minister said.

It was revealed during the visit that Gal Oya Plantation Company has successfully implemented the organic fertilizer production program and has given a positive approach to eco-friendly organic farming throughout the country.
