An all party meeting was held yesterday to discuss prevailing issues in the education sector including teachers and principals salary anomalies.
Representatives of political parties including Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party former President Maithripala Sirisena, former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa and Deputy Leader of the United National Party Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, and representatives of teachers and principals trade unions were part of the discussion held at the Abhayarama Temple in Narahenpita.
Speaking during the discussion Chief Prelate of the Abhayarama Temple, Venerable Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera said he requested the President and the Prime Minister to provide prompt solutions to teachers and principals salary concerns.
Ananda Thera noted the President asked him to take control to resolve the teachers’ issues, through discussions.
The Thera said he also informed the Head of State to build faith in authorities amongst the public.
Former President Maithripala Sirisena meanwhile said trade unions are also looking for an acceptable solution to be provided by the government, with a plan.
Meanwhile Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said former Minister of Education Minister GL Peiris had informed Parliament last year during the Budget debate, that salary anomalies of teachers will be resolved through the next Budget, and the relevant amount will be provided as an allowance till then.
Deputy Leader of the UNP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said it is the responsibility of the government to come to terms to resolve the matter.
He added a fair solution must be provided, while stating that they are not using children’s education for political gain.
