A hotelier in Tissamaharama is clearing land around Yala National Park’s Forest Conservation Indicator Zone without any hindrance to build a Cabana hotel, according to residents of the area.
It is reported that approx. 40 acres from this Zone have been cleared.
Residents state that the Cabana hotel would have a reservoir to collect rainwater nearby.
‘Roossa’ trees too have been cut down during the forest clearing, along with ‘Kadakollan’ -a favourite food of wild elephants -the wood of the trees have been used to build the cabanas, according to the residents.
Sri Lanka Mirror learns that despite residents notifying the Kirinda police and Forest Conservation officials in this regard, no legal action has been taken against the hotelier.
