Five people were missing when a boat (bridge ferry) carrying passengers across the Kalu River capsized last night (03), police said.
Four people who were drowning in the river have been rescued with the help of a boat at a nearby ferry and one person was still missing.
The accident took place while sailing from the Galpatha ferry on the Kalu River to the Bolossagama ferry.
Three motorcycles and a bicycle loaded on the bridge ferry also fell into the river and the motorcycle and the bicycle also sank in the river.
The search for the missing person has begun.
Earlier on November 23, six children were killed when a ferry capsized in a lagoon in the Kurinjankerni area in Kinniya, Trincomalee.
