DIG in charge of the Children and Women’s Bureau Renuka Jayasundara says that there are between10 to 15 rapes being committed per day in the country.
She was speaking to the media on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women which falls today (25).
She added that most of the frequent complaints against women and children are related to sexual abuse.
She added that the highest number of rapes were reported among children between the ages of 10 and 15 as a result of love affairs.
The theme of this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is “Orange the World: End Violence against Women Now!”.
From today, 16 days have been allocated marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and a bright future free of violence against women and girls.
One in three women worldwide gets abused
According to the United Nations, one in three women worldwide has been abused in their lifetime.
The organization says the situation is even worse in times of Covid, war and climate change.
