In the first two weeks of this month, around 33,000 (33,000) new passports were issued under the one-day and normal services, according to Immigration and Emigration Department sources.
Between 1,500 and 1,700 people have obtained their passports from the Colombo Head Office per day. Accordingly, around 23,500 new passports were issued by the Head Office within the first two weeks.
The number of new passports obtained from the Matara, Kandy, Vavuniya and Kurunegala offices of the Department of Immigration and Emigration in the first two weeks of this month is around 10,200 (ten thousand two hundred), the sources said.
According to a senior spokesman at the Department of Immigration and Emigration, the majority of people applying for new passports are young people and that such high demand for passports is a rare occurrence.
