Bank employee stabbed to death by robber couple

A 30-year-old bank employee was stabbed to death by a robber couple who arrived on a motorcycle and attempted to snatch the victim’s wife’s handbag.

The incident took place on the 20th at Akaravita on Ja-Ela Road in Gampaha.

The victim was identified as Rasika Vinoda Fernandopulle who worked at a state bank located at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake.

The father of his wife was also seriously injured in the clash and was admitted to the Gampaha Hospital.

The deceased’s wife also works at a bank in Gampaha.

Police said the suspect couple who arrived on the motorcycle had attempted to steal her handbag when she was returning home from work along with a neighbour.

Investigations revealed that the male robber rode the motorcycle while the female robber seated behind him stole the handbag.

The police said that the couple along with the motorcycle fell into a water-filled ditch as she was tightly holding on to the handbag.

The husband and father ran out of the house hearing the screams of the woman and the neighbour since the robbery had taken place near the house of the bank employee.

The bank employee’s husband and father had rescued the female robber first from the ditch.

When the victim was about to make a phone call to the police, the male robber stabbed the bank employee’s husband and father, freed the woman and escaped.

Police said the husband and father of the bank employee, who were seriously injured after being stabbed, were admitted to the Gampaha Hospital, where the husband passed away.

Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of Gampaha Division Rohana Gamage said the robbers have not yet been identified but added that they are a part of a gang that continues to rob people.

The robber couple has fled, abandoning the motorcycle which had also been stolen.

Apart from the bank employee’s handbag, the police had found two other handbags lying on the ground.

During the investigation, it was revealed that one of the handbags was stolen from a Pradeshiya Sabha employee who was travelling on the road between Weliweriya and Yakkala and the other handbag was stolen from a woman who was travelling on the road in Meegahawatte.

The robbery had been recorded on security cameras, and the police said investigations are underway to identify the couple and arrest them.
