‘Be careful’ – President warns fmr. President, PM

The Presidential Commission appointed by the previous government to investigate the Easter attack has recommended that the government, including the former President, Prime Minister and Cabinet, be held responsible for the attack and it has been referred to Parliament, the Attorney General and the Criminal Investigation Department for further action,  President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said, adding that those found guilty by the commission could be prosecuted through an Act of Parliament.

He said the government has the required two-thirds majority (2/3) to do so, and requested the opposition to be careful when making requests and not to deceive the public.

President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa made this observation addressing the opening ceremony of the ‘Golden Gate Kalyani’ yesterday afternoon (24).

The new flyover was constructed to ease the traffic congestion along the Kelani Bridge due to vehicles entering and leaving Colombo.

The Government of Sri Lanka and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) prepared the initial plans in 2012 and after a feasibility study in 2013, the Cabinet approved the construction of the bridge in 2014. The relevant agreements were signed in the same year.

Construction commenced in 2017 after the project provided housing for public and private locations that were affected by this project. The project cost Rs. 55,000 million and took four years.

The new flyover will have 6 lanes from the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway entrance to the Bandaranaike Roundabout and from there to the Orugodawatta and Ingurukade junction in 4 lanes. This will provide access to the expressway from Ingurukade Junction to the Port City of Colombo and from Orugodawatta to Athurugiriya.

It is noteworthy that the bridge is constructed in a manner that does not obstruct the flow of the Kelani River, preserving the natural beauty of the environment with many species of plants including Koboneela, Esala, Mai Mara, Mee, Kumbuk and several other varieties being planted on either side of the main road.

During the reign of President Mahinda Rajapaksa from 2005 to 2010 a massive development process took place in the country. The President said that sustainable solutions would be provided for all other issues.

Despite the Covid epidemic, a number of infrastructure development projects have been initiated. Rajapaksa pointed out that all these activities will continue, adding that if the country does not have to close in the future, all the promised projects will be completed as planned.

At the time of the Easter attack the Good Governance Government was in power and Maithripala Sirisena served as the President and Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister.
