13 young elephants that are in the custody of the National Zoo are being prepared to be repatriated to their custodians.
This in keeping with a court order issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Courts to the Director General of the Zoological Department.
Several elephants have already been handed over.
Bhanu, who was at the Rideegama Safari and said to belong to the Kataragama Devalaya, was taken away yesterday (14), by the Kataragama Devalaya Basnayake Nilame.
Bhanu was among those taken into protective custody in 2015 from several persons found to be keeping elephants illegally. He was earlier kept at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and later transferred to the Rideegama Safari in 2019.
Footage shows how Bhanu did not want to leave the premises but was taken away by those who arrived for him.
