Businessman remanded over garlic scam

Welisara Magistrate Heshantha de Mel has ordered to remand a businessman who had allegedly assisted in the illegal removal of two containers containing 54,000 kg of garlic belonging to the Lanka Sathosa.

The suspect, a businessman named Velayutham Sridharan, has been ordered to be remanded until Sep. 28.

The businessman was arrested by the Peliyagoda Police Special Investigation Unit on Sep. 24th on charges of criminal breach of trust, concealing information and illegal release of goods.

The Deputy General Manager of the Lanka Sathosa Financial Division who was earlier arrested by the Peliyagoda Police Special Investigation Unit in connection with the case, is currently in remand custody as well.
