Leader of the JVP Anura Dissanayake states that the price of rice has risen to an unbearable level due to the ignorant decisions of the government. The JVP leader says that the government did not have any definite plan to control the price of rice or to bring rice to the market without any shortage.
Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo today, Dissanayake said that in the recent past, the government had staged so much drama on media about controlling the price of rice and defeating the rice mafia, but they had not implemented any program to control prices or defeat the mafia.
He points out that an unprecedented number of gazettes were issued for rice in a very short period of time and that the President had to withdraw those gazettes within a few days. He added that the President controlled prices by going to retail outlets and when that failed, he appointed an Essential Services Commissioner, enforced the state of emergency and raided the rice warehouses of large scale mill owners.
The JVP leader also says that in the past the Minister of Agriculture only issued contradictory and ridiculous statements from time to time. On one occasion, Mahindananda Aluthgamage had said that he would not import a single grain of rice, but on another occasion, he had said that he would defeat the rice mafia and that the government and the President had finally fallen on their knees before the rice mill owners.
