Aug 01, Colombo: Catholic clergy of Sri Lanka expressing concern over possible arrest of Fr. Jeevantha Peiris, who was a prominent figure in the anti-government protests, demanded the government to stop the repression of the Aragalaya protesters and focus on taking actions to address the immediate and long-term problems.
Issuing a statement signed by 1640 Catholic Priests, Sisters and Brothers from 23 congregations, the clergy said the appointment of Ranil Wickramasinghe as acting president and subsequently president, has led to increased repression of protests, protesters and those supporting protests.
The Catholic clergy reiterated that they will support Aragalaya and protect those involved, and appealed to the fellow citizens, as well as foreign governments and international organizations to do the same.
