Kumara Welgama, who was elected to parliament under the ticket of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), is said to be making plans to initiate a new party called ”Api Sri Lanka’, targeting to form a common political front at the upcoming LG polls.
He has suggested contesting together to end up victorious in the Western Province. It is also said that this alliance would be controlled by a leadership council.
The main intention is to defeat the government after uniting all opposition factions under an united front.
It is said that plans are underway to unite political factions under Karu Jayasuriya, Sajith Premadasa, Ranil Wickremesinghe, Maithripala Sirisena, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Champika Ranawaka, Tiran Alles, Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila.
So far, it has been suggested to present a second tier from each of these factions at the upcoming Provincial Council elections.
According to reports, Welgama’s plans for a new party has not met with much opposition from within the SJB with several SJB MP’s including Rajitha Senaratne responding positively.

Meanwhile, it has also been proposed to bring in Vimukthi, son of former politician – Vijaya Kumaratunga and former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, as a candidate for the Western Provincial Council.
