Special investigation conducted by the government has revealed that by selling imported cement at black market rates a profit of Rs. 1000 per bag of cement is earned.
It was revealed that imported cement costs around $5 per bag which is around Rs. 1000. Commercial banks release dollars at the rate of Rs. 205 a dollar.
Secretary to the President Gamini Senarath has held a special discussion with cement importers to bring the high cement prices to a reasonable price.
It has been decided to allow cement importers to import as much cement as they want, sell the cement at a competitive price and bring the prices down to a reasonable level.
