Ceremonial Tusker Nadungamuwe Raja on his way to Kandy Esala Perahera

Aug 09, Colombo: Nadungamuwe Raja, the Ceremonial Tusker carrying the sacred Tooth Relic casket at the Esala Perahera has started its 90 kilometer journey to Kandy from Nadungamuwe.

The owner of the tusker, Dr. Harsha Dharmavijaya said the elephant would walk to Kandy for nine days. He will walk about 10 kilometers a day and for eight nights will rest at arranged places including temples on the route.

The 67-year-old elephant is considered to be the largest elephant in Asia and will be taken on foot every year for the Perahera for his safety, the owner said.

Due to the Covid-19 situation in the country, the elephant will be taken through by roads to Warakapola to avoid the crowds and from Warakapola the tusker will be walking along the Kandy Road.

Dr. Harsha Dharmavijaya said that the elephant will be provided security by the Police, the Police Special Task Force and the Army during its journey and return home.

Many people lined up the streets to see the magnificent tusker and offered obeisance to him along the way.
