Chairman unaware of the bid received for the ‘Queen of Asia’

Chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Authority Thilak Weerasinghe had told the media in Dubai yesterday that he had not been notified that a bid of US $ 100 million (Rs. 20 billion) had been received for the world’s largest natural blue sapphire named ‘Queen of Asia’ which was found in Sri Lanka.

He was responding to a query regarding reports that a Dubai company had agreed to buy the gem at that price.

The ‘Corundum’ type gem weighing 310 kilograms was found in a mine in the Balangoda area in Ratnapura.
