* Chinese Red Cross donates $40,000 worth dry ration packs to 2,100 families in Sri Lanka

May 31, Colombo: The Red Cross Society of China has donated 2,100 dry ration packs worth $40,000 to Sri Lanka, the Chinese Embassy in Colombo said.
Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka-Qi Zhenhong and his wife handed over the dry ration packs to over 10,000 people of 2,100 underprivileged families in Homagama on Monday (30th May) afternoon Sri Lanka Red Cross, the Embassy said.
Chinese Red Cross has announced to donate additional USD 150,000 cash assistance to help the people of Sri Lanka.
According to the Chinese Embassy, each food pack contains 9 food items weighing about 12 kilograms. The food items include 5 kgs of Keeri Samba rice, 1 kg of sugar, 1 kg of Dhal, 2 kgs of wheat flour, 1 liter of coconut oil, 200 grams of tea leaves, 500 grams of sprats, a 425 gram can of fish and 1 kg of chick peas.
The food items were procured through the approved tender procedures and in line with standards of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society for total 2,100 families and approximately 10,500 beneficiaries, the Embassy said.
The beneficiaries were selected from people who experience livelihood losses due to fuel shortages and power interruptions (drivers, workers in the construction field and factories, salon operators, tourism sector employees etc.), self-employed persons, female-headed households with dependent children, families with children below 5 years of age, households with elderly (age > 65) with a low economic base, households with members suffering from chronic
Illnesses and inmates of children’s homes, elders’ homes, and religious places.
Local officials expressed their gratitude for the donation, adding that Sri Lanka is currently facing the most serious economic difficulties, and the donation from the Chinese government and Chinese people will help the people of Sri Lanka to overcome the obstacles, Xinhua reported.
