Claim of Panamure police killing man, untrue – Sarath Weerasekara

An individual had reportedly died while in the custody of the Panamure Police early this morning (17).

A large number of people had gathered at the police station, claiming the man had died after being assaulted. Traffic on the Kolonna – Embilipitiya road has also been disrupted due to the situation, reports add.

Speaking in Parliament, minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekara had rejected this claim.

He informed Parliament today that the man that had died had been regularly accused of assaulting his wife and daughter.

“The daughter of the man had filed a complaint on Nov. 12 that her father had injured her after assaulting her with a wooden club. The man had gone missing since then, and was arrested only last night (16).

He was also found to be severely addicted to drugs,” the Minister added.

The man had attempted to hang himself in his cell but had died despite being found by police officers while being taken to be hospitalized, he further noted.

The minister emphasised there is no connection between this man and yesterday’s rally of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the claims levelled against the police are blatant falsehoods.

Meanwhile, it is said that two police officers have been interdicted in this regard.
