Community water supply schemes to provide drinking water to rural areas

July 29, Colombo: Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa stated at Temple Trees yesterday (28) that a program has been prepared to provide clean drinking water to the people in rural areas who cannot be covered by large water supply schemes through community water supply schemes.
The Prime Minister made this observation while inaugurating the “Greater Matale” Water Supply Project from Temple Trees through internet technology.
The Greater Matale Water Supply Project aims to provide 24-hour water supply to the city of Matale and its environs, directly benefiting 354,000 beneficiaries of 90,000 families, Prime Minister’s Office said in a media statement.
The Government of Sri Lanka and France have provided financial assistance of Rs. 31 billion for this project.
Speaking at the occasion, the Premier said the government’s goal is to provide clean drinking water to 4.7 million families in the next four years and many water projects are being implemented throughout the country with local and foreign funds.
The Ministry of Water Supply and Drainage is ready to open 33 new projects to provide water supply to 245,500 houses this year alone, the Prime Minister said.
