The Colombo District Court yesterday (21) issued an injunction restraining People’s Bank from auctioning the property of a Galnewa rice trader who was in financial difficulties due to the Covid epidemic.
The censorship came after the Central Bank of Sri Lanka issued a circular seeking relief for businessmen affected by the Covid epidemic, following a petition filed against the auction of properties on the 30th in violation of those circulars.
Sanjeewa Wijesundera, a rice trader residing in Galnewa, Negampaha, had filed the petition through his lawyer Aruna Ranasinghe.
After considering the petition unilaterally, Chief District Judge Aruna Aluthge also directed the bank to appear before the court on January 4.
Ranasinghe, appearing for the petitioner, told the court that despite the decisions of the Central Bank and the Government of Sri Lanka to provide relief to the customers, the Defendant Bank’s actions of ignoring it would cause great prejudice to the customers.
