The police team is planning to compete in the upcoming Sri Lanka Inter Sports Club Cricket Tournament in a novel way, reports say.
They are to follow the footsteps of the Army by recruiting cricketers as higher ranked police officers.
The inability of the Police to recruit to higher ranks without considering educational qualifications, the approval of the Police Commission and the compulsory gazetting as well as the protest of permanent police officers awaiting their promotions are said to be a few such obstacles.
At the present, although contracted players are brought in for the police teams engaged in sports such as rugby and cricket, they are not given ranks in the police force.
Cricketers Dinesh Chandimal and Thisara Perera were recently recruited to the Army ranks of Major and Captain.
It is said that several players have expressed interest to play for the Police cricket team if they are given the ranks of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and Chief Inspector of Police (CI). Such players include a leading batsman of the national team and a former Test batsman, reports add.
Not a single member of the Police cricket team has represented the national team after TB Kehelgamuwa and Jayantha Paranaathala.
