A stock of confiscated foreign whiskey has been sold at the Customs headquarters to its employees for Rs. 1,500 per bottle, ‘Lankadeepa’ reports.
Usually, a duty of Rs. Rs. 4,000 is imposed per litre of imported whiskey.
An official of the Ministry of Finance has said that in a backdrop where the government is facing an economic crisis, selling confiscated liquor at such a low price is quite controversial.
However, he had also said that this is a usual practice by the Customs during the festive season.
The official had further noted that Customs employees have purchased much and some of them would be selling them off at a much higher price.
