Although an egg is sold for between Rs. 58 – 60 in many areas these days, the owners of the chicken farms in Kuliapitiya claim that they cannot sell an egg produced in their farms for even Rs.35.
Before the fuel crisis, eggs produced in their farms were taken to distant areas by their trucks and sold to wholesalers.
But they lament that with the fuel crisis that process has been stalled.
Therefore, traders coming from outside Colombo have to sell their eggs at low prices as they cannot keep large quantities of eggs in their possession, they said.
As there is a high demand for eggs from far out areas, these traders purchaseeggs at low prices from these farms and stock them and sell it to these areasat exorbitant prices.
