The distribution of Rs 420 million to over 16,000 fishermen directly affected by the MV X-Press Pearl ship fire will commence today (13), State Minister of Fisheries Activities, Kanchana Wijesekera said.
He added the Ship’s Insurance Company got Rs 720 million as part of the interim compensation sought for the period 20 May to 1 June, of this, only Rs 420 million was allocated to compensate fishermen who were affected by the disaster.
Wijesekera added the money will not be paid by cash or cheque due to the ongoing Court case and because more compensation is being sought. The Central Bank will directly transfer the money to the accounts of affected fishermen.
He added the District Secretariats have submitted the lists of affected fishermen adding that the payments will be made this week. He added that those who were eligible and have not received compensation could submit an appeal to the District Secretariat.
Wijesekera added the interim compensation was sought following discussions held by Minister of Justice, Ali Sabry while the Attorney General, Ministry of Fisheries and other relevant authorities were also present.
