
The Kekirawa Magistrate Court today (10) imposed a fine on an individual for recently harassing an elephant calf while driving a jeep.
The jeep driver, a resident of the Kekirawa area, had been arrested after an operation led by wildlife officials including the warden of the Minneriya National Park.
Under the provisions of a gazette issued in 1938, it is forbidden to commit crimes against wildlife along the Trincomalee – Sigiriya road falling through Habarana.
The video of the elephant calf being harassed was widely shared on social media and sparked mass outrage among netizens.
