In order to ensure equal access to education, the education ministry must ensure that 247,000 teachers and 4.1 million students are provided with computers, tabs, access to Internet and sufficient data, said social rights activist and columnist Kusal Perera.
In a note posted on his Facebook page, Perera said the monthly salary paid to the teachers should not be spent on online teaching, because teachers are not required to spend their salary to upgrade facilities or run teaching activities at schools.
The teachers are paid a salary to cover for their personal expenses and not for the facilities at schools, he added.
The education ministry must provide equal facilities to the children because the country’s Constitution guarantees equal education rights for all, he said.
He stressed that the teachers union should educate the parents on this issue.
