Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa arrives in Thailand for temporary stay

Aug 11, Colombo: Former Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa arrived in Thailand on Thursday, seeking temporary shelter in a second Southeast Asian country after fleeing Sri Lanka last month, Reuters reported.

Rajapaksa has arrived at Bangkok’s Don Muang airport around 8 p.m. (1300 GMT) on a chartered flight from Singapore’s Seletar Airport, the report said.

Following the mass protests in the country last month, the former President with his spouse fled to the Maldives on July 13 and then left to Singapore on July 14. After spending 28 days in Singapore so far, the former President has arrived in Thailand seeking shelter.

Gotabaya Rajapakse stayed in Singapore from July 14th and was granted visa for 14 days each on two occasions by the Singapore government. The visa period given to him by the Singaporean authorities expired Wednesday (11),

Thailand’s Foreign Minister has said that Gotabaya Rajapaksa has no plans to seek political asylum in their country and with a diplomatic passport, the former President will be able to stay in Thailand for 90 days.
