Funeral parlours profiteering off Covid-19

With the rise of Covid-19 deaths, Funeral Parlours are charging Rs. 10,000 – 18,000 per basic coffin.

The cost is inclusive of collection of a Covid-19 body from the hospital and transport to the crematorium, according to relatives of the deceased.

However, pre-Covid-19, the cost was between Rs. 6,000 -8,000.

The coffins used for Covid-19 bodies are made from Albizia wood. A coffin manufacturer in Panadura stated they provide the coffins to funeral parlours at a cost of Rs. 2,000 -3,000 per basic coffin.
