It has been revealed that the government loses one million dollars annually due to a furnace oil racket that has been going on at the Colombo port for several years.
This was revealed during a discussion between top officials of the port and the Minister of Environment – Mahinda Amaraweera.
Officials at the dockyard have informed the minister that an estimated 16 million tonnes of furnace fuel is discarded annually by ships entering the country.
Although the Central Environmental Authority has given permission to 28 companies to refine the waste fuel, it has been revealed that only four companies have the facilities to do so.
Even these companies only have the capacity to refine one ton of fuel per day each and therefore, are not capable of refining the entire stock of furnace oil discarded through the year.
