Gazette on Obscene Publications Bill scrapped

The Ministry of Justice has decided to revoke the extraordinary gazette publication of the Obscene Publications Bill.

A media release issued by the Secretary of the Justice Ministry today (29) states that the ministry’s intention was not to hamper freedom of speech but to introduce laws while safeguarding the privacy of women who have become victims of harassment as well to safeguard the welfare of children.

However, the decision to revoke the gazette was made based on the concerns raised by the civil society groups who have expressed concern and have stated that such a bill would hamper many creative artists and their industries.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Justice has announced that the previously implemented Obscene Publications Bill extraordinary gazette will now be revoked.
