* GMOA requests government to issue NIC number to every child at birth

Sept 27, Colombo: The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) states that every child should be issued a National Identity Card (NIC) number at birth.
Issuance of a National Identity Card number to every child proposes to ensure child rights and social security, the powerful Doctors’ trade union says.
Attention has been drawn to the lack of an identity card number for children who are vaccinated and the Technical Committee has paid attention to the proposal made by the Family Health Bureau to issue a National Identity Card number to children at birth.
Further, the Government Medical Officers’ Association had submitted a proposal to the “Expert Committee appointed to draft a new constitution” on December 30, 2020 pointing out that In order to ensure the rights of the child, every child should be issued a National Identity Card number at birth and that the identity card containing that number should be given to them at the age of 16 or earlier.
