Graduates from the University of Colombo have refused to receive their degree from the newly appointed Chancellor – Ven. Murutthettuwe Ananda Thero at the convocation held earlier today (17).
Noting that the Thero is a political appointee, student unions have earlier formally requested either the Vice Chancellor or senior professors to confer their degrees.
As a result, the Chancellor had attended the convocation only as a special invitee.
Usually, the degree is conferred by the Chancellor.
Meanwhile, lecturers of the Management faculty have formally informed that they would not be attending the convocation, as a mark of protest against the appointment of Ven. Murutthettuwe Ananda Thero.
Graduates of the Arts Faculty have attended the convocation with black armbands in protest.
The convocation activities will continue tomorrow (18) and the day after (19) as well.
