Hesitant by those over 60-years to get COVID jab worries health officials

Chief epidemiologist Dr. Samitha Ginige lamented that most of those who have shown hesitation to take the COVID-19 vaccine were those above 60-years of age and warned that it was not a good trend.

Expressing concerns over the significant number of people who had not received the COVID-19 vaccine despite the recent increase of the COVID related death toll, Ginige said most of those who were hesitant to take the jab were those above 60.

“Vaccination can reduce the number of deaths. It can also reduce transmission. However, some senior citizens are not interested in receiving the vaccine. This is not good because most vulnerable to COVID-19 complications are the elderly,” he said.

Out of the deaths that have occurred so far since the outbreak of the pandemic, around 77 per cent were people above the age of 60, he said adding that “so I urge people, especially those who are above 60, to get vaccinated.”

He said so far, 68.4 per cent of the target group (those above 30 years of age) had received at least a single dose while 16.1 had been given both shots.
