Inaugural Virtual NTTX conducted successfully

The inaugural virtual Trilateral Naval Table Top Exercise (NTTX) – 2021 was conducted on Wednesday and Thursday (14-15) with the participation of the Indian, Maldivian and Sri Lankan Navies, the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said on Thursday (15).

Rear Admiral Gurcharan Singh, Chief Staff Officer (CSO) Operations, Western Naval Command, Indian Navy; Rear Admiral P.S. Mahawithana, Director General Operations, Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and Colonel Hilmy from the Maldives National Defence Force were among the senior officers that participated in the inaugural session of NTTX-2021 on Thursday (15). The exercise was coordinated by the Maritime Warfare Centre, Mumbai.

NTTX-2021 is aimed at enhancing mutual understanding and exchange of best practices/ procedures for countering common trans-national maritime crime, like curbing narcotics and assistance in ‘Maritime Search and Rescue’ in the region, the High Commission said.

The seamless cooperation achieved between the Navies was the result of continued engagements like the NTTX to evolve common standard operating procedures (SOPs), it said. “NTTX-2021 exemplifies the deep trilateral engagement between India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka, which has strengthened immensely in the maritime domain over the past years,” the High Commission said.

Interaction between the three neighbouring counties in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) has also grown significantly in recent years, the High Commission said. It may be recalled that India, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives agreed to focus on ways of enhancing maritime security cooperation in the Indian Ocean Rim (IOR) at the fourth National Security Adviser (NSA)-level trilateral meeting held in Colombo in November last year, it said.

That meeting was attended by India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary General (Rtd.) Kamal Gunaratne, and Maldives’ Defence Minister Mariya Didi. Senior officials from Seychelles and Mauritius also participated virtually. (PA)
