Inter-provincial train services, including trains in operation for commuters travelling for essential services, have been suspended from Saturday (17). Accordingly, 15 trains scheduled to operate, were cancelled due to the risk of COVID-19 spread.
“On 16 July, instructions were given to the General Manager of Railways through the Ministry of Transport to cancel all trains operating between provinces from 17 July.
Although the Railways Department operated several trains from 14 July, as a result of the continuous requests made by the Sri Lanka Station Masters’ Union (SLSMU), to State Minister Dilum Amunugama and the relevant authorities for trains to operate for the transportation of commuters travelling for essential services, this will also be suspended,” SLSMU General Secretary Kasun Chamara said. He was responding to a question raised by Ceylon Today on 16 July.
