Lack of plans to vaccinate children compromise their safety?

Although the vaccination drive for principals, teachers and non-academic staff began today (12), no instructions have been provided with regard to the vaccination of students.

Speaking on the matter, Deputy Director General of Health Services, Dr. Hemantha Herath said that as of now, students are expected to strictly adhere to the COVID-19 health guidelines issued, and that this is the only preventive measure that can be taken.

However, he added that if the necessary regulations are implemented with regard to administering the jab to those under the age of 18, the required measures will be taken in this regard.

Speaking further, Dr. Herath assured that whilst several persons above the age of 18 from certain target groups such as teachers, journalists and factory workers have received the vaccine against COVID-19, other persons who are not included in these groups too, will receive the vaccine, irrespective of their age.

He added, however, that this could be done only if Sri Lanka is able to receive the required doses of the vaccines.
