A special investigations team from the CID has gone to the Lankadeepa head office at Hunupitiya Cross Road yesterday (28) to question the Lankadeepa Editor and journalists regarding a statement made by Former Executive Director of CAA, Thushan Goonewardene to the newspaper.
However, they have had to leave as the Editor has stated that he is not prepared to make a statement at that time. The CID officers had left, stating they would be back on another day to take the statements of those concerned.
The Lankadeepa newspaper published the comments made by the former CAA Executive Director, who resigned recently.
Media organisations point out that the CID questioning of the Editor and journalists regarding articles is a threat to media freedom and that the CID should instead question the former CAA head and get information from him to proceed with investigations of the garlic and other scams within Sathosa.
Meanwhile, in the letter sent to the Lankadeepa Editor regarding the matter by CID SP C.D. Wickramasekera, the name of a Divaina Editor is also mentioned, much to the amusement of journalists since the Divaina newspaper does not belong to the Wijeya Newspaper group.
