According to police sources, investigations are underway into the death of the youth and it is suspected that he had committed suicide by stabbing himself.
According to police sources, the knife found near the body of the Maldivian youth had been identified by a Maldivian friend who was staying with him at Anderson Road, Dehiwala as one that was used at his home.
The youth is said to have been addicted to alcohol and Cannabis and according to the police, the victim had left the house on the night of the 4th after telling his friend that he was going to meet his girlfriend. However, he had not returned that day.
His friend had told the police that the victim had called him that night and had cried telling him his parents had refused to send him money for his expenses.
The body of the victim was found the next day (05) by the police on the Wellawatte beach.
The postmortem examination of the youth is scheduled to be held at the Kalubowila Hospital today (09) and thereafter it could be determined if the youth had committed suicide or if he had been murdered.
