Minister instructs UDA to take measures quickly to resolve issues at Peliyagoda Manning Trade Complex

Sept 18, Colombo: Prasanna Ranatunga, Minister of Urban Development and Housing has advised the Urban Development Authority to immediately take steps to resolve the issues at the Peliyagoda Manning Trade Complex.
The Minister further instructed the Urban Development Authority to report to him regarding the measures taken together with the Trade Unions, Police and other government agencies to solve the problems.
The Minister said he has received information that the Peliyagoda Manning Trade Complex is being used by outside parties for various acts of misconduct and advised the police to strictly enforce the law against those engaged in such misconduct.
Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga made these observations while attending a discussion held on Friday (16) with the officials of the Urban Development Authority and the Peliyagoda Trade Association regarding the main problems in the Peliyagoda trade complex.
Several matters including the main problems in the provision of facilities such as shops, parking lots, toilets, electricity, water etc. in the trade complex were discussed at the meeting.
The Minister also advised the officials to take necessary measures to make the Peliyagoda Manning Market a place that generates more income and said that he would stand up for the traders at every possible opportunity.
Minister Ranatunga said that the Peliyagoda market should be maintained in a way that does not burden the traders as well as the consumers. Also, the Minister pointed out the need to maintain the trade complex so that it is not a burden to the institution and advised to implement a new program with short-term, medium-term and long-term solutions.
The Minister further pointed out that Peliyagoda Manning Trade Complex should be developed as a trade complex with modern technology and for that, the full support of the traders using the shopping complex is required.
Decision to move the Pettah Manning Market to Peliyagoda was taken in 2013 as a measures to alleviate the traffic congestion in Pettah and surrounding areas of Colombo city
The other main reason is that since The Peliyagoda interchange connects with all expressways including the Airport Expressway, Southern Expressway, Central Expressway, and Northern Expressway, making it easy to transport goods throughout the country.
Peliyagoda Manning Market built at a cost of Rs. 6.5 billion, is a fully equipped wholesale trade complex spread over 13.5 acres and consists of 1,169 stores.
Paliagoda Manning Trade Complex, which consists of four floors, has been constructed so that vegetable transport trucks can reach every store up to the 03rd floor.
It also has many facilities including employee lounges, restaurants, cold storage facilities, and a parking garage that can park around 600 vehicles.
On this occasion, Urban Development Authority Chairman Nimesh Herath, its Director General Prasad Ranaweera, DIG Rohan Premaratne, Peliyagoda Manning Trade Association Chairman M.M. Mr. Upasena and a group of officers participated.
