Nov 25, Colombo: The Minister of Industry Wimal Weerawansa Wednesday inspected the factory under construction by the World Wide Commodities Private Limited in Pannipitiya with the latest production capacity and state-of-the-art technology to add value to “one million products of farmers” and export to local and foreign markets.

Speaking to the media after inspecting the factory, Minister Wimal Weerawansa said, a state-of-the-art factory is being set up at the location to add value to country’s locally grown products such as spice crops of cinnamon, pepper, cloves, cardamom and ayurvedic medicines and export them to Europe.

The World Wide Commodities Private Limited expects the factory to be fully operational by January next year.

“With the opening of this factory, latest technology will be available to a wide range of products, including to add value to the quality of all spices that have traditionally been exported and to produce Ayurveda medicines based on herbs. This will enable us to add value to the products of one million local farmers in the future and export them to local and foreign markets.”

The Minister said this factory has created an environment where farmers can get a very good price for their crops and products.

“Today the country needs such factories. This gives a higher price to the farmer’s produce as well as increases the foreign exchange earning capacity by adding value to their products. We hope that the opening of this factory next January will lead to a major revolution in our country’s agricultural production,” he added.

Worldwide Commodities (Pvt) Ltd has invested around Rs. 3 billion in the construction and machinery of the factory.

Ruchika Nishantha Samarawickrema, Director of the company says that the factory has brought under one roof the world’s highest technology to add value to agricultural products.

A program has already been prepared, over the next two years, to reach out to one million farming families through farmer organizations, purchase their produce and improve their living standards.

He added that his factory will be able to earn around Rs. 03 billion in export revenue next year.
