* Mirigama – Kurunegala section of the Central Expressway vested with the public

Jan 15, Colombo: President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa declared open the second phase of the Central Expressway (E04) from Mirigama to Kurunegala this afternoon (15th January).
The section from Mirigama to Kurunegala, which has been designated as the ‘Athugalpura Entrance’, has been constructed in a manner that minimizes environmental and social impacts.
After the opening of the section, the President and the Prime Minister arrived in their cars from Mirigama to Kurunegala and the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s car was driven by Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa.
Afterwards, all the invited guests joined the ceremony held at the Kurunegala Interchange.
The 40.09 km section of the Expressway, currently known as the most beautiful expressway section in the country, has 4 lanes. The total cost of this project is 137 billion rupees. It is noteworthy that this section of road was constructed by local contractors with local funds.
Five Interchange Centers with Payment Counters have been set up at Mirigama, Nakalagamuwa, Dambokka, Kurunegala and Yaggapitiya.
The Expressway Administration says that a four-wheeler entering Mirigama and leaving Kurunegala or Yaggapitiya will be charged Rs. 250, a six-wheeler Rs. 350 and vehicles over six wheels Rs. 550.
The four-lane Colombo-Kandy Central Expressway will be completed in four segments. The first quarter is from Kadawatha to Meerigama (37.09 km), second quarter from Mirigama to Kurunegala (40.91 km), the access road (9.7 km) running up to Ambepussa is included, third quarter from Kurunegala, Pothuhera to Galagedara (32.50 km) and fourth quarter is from Kurunegala to Dambulla (60.30 km).
