Navy rescues 17 persons missing in the ferry accident in Kinniya, 5 bodies recovered

Nov 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka Navy says 17 people have been rescued from a ferry that capsized near Kurinchankerny bridge in Kinniya, Trincomalee Tuesday morning (23). Among the rescued were three school children, the Navy said.

Sri Lanka Navy said it has commenced a dedicated rescue mission this morning to locate the missing persons deploying eight (08) rescue teams representing Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS), Special Boat Squadron (SBS), Marines and Divers and operations are underway to search missing persons.

As of now, 05 dead bodies have been recovered by rescue teams while 17 persons have been rescued and hospitalized. The Navy is continuing a search operation in the sea area further.

Meanwhile, the police said six students who were on their way to the schools have died when the ferry capsized.

About 20 people were on board at the time of the accident and it is learned that some of them had swum ashore.

Local residents say that the ferry connecting Kinniya and Kurunjankulam is being used as a new bridge is being built to replace the existing one.

The police say the death toll could rise further.
