Sept 14, Colombo: The Ministry of Highways last evening (13) tested the lighting systems set up at the new Kelani Bridge, Sri Lanka’s first high-tech cable-stayed bridge over the Kelani River at Peliyagoda that is nearing completion.
Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando recently instructed to light the new Kelani Bridge, which is being constructed using the highest technology for the first time in Sri Lanka, to attract local and foreign tourists.
The Minister said that the new Kelani Bridge is a major factor in enhancing the beauty of Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka, and that the lighting will help to show the beauty of the Kelani River and the beauty of the bridge.
Therefore, the Minister has instructed to focus on new technologies used in developed countries to beautify bridges and to use those methods if they are suitable for the country for the new Kelani Bridge.
The new Kelani Bridge has now been illuminated on the instructions of Minister Johnston Fernando. Accordingly, the functionality of the lighting system was tested yesterday.
The project to construct the new six-lane bridge adjacent to the old Kelani Bridge is funded by the financial assistance of Japanese Yen 35,020 million from Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA).
