Secretary to the Ministry of Education Prof. Kapila Perera says that measures will be taken to appoint new principals for 90 national schools in the country including Royal College, Visakha Vidyalaya and Ananda College.
He says that the principals of the relevant schools are due to retire by December 31 this year.
However, principals of many popular schools have requested from several parties for service extensions, the minister secretary has revealed.
He also says that there are currently 5,000 acting principals.
Kapila Perera emphasized that it should become a practice to retire by giving others the opportunity, after 60 years of satisfactory service in the public sector.
He also says that applications have been gazetted to select new principals for schools.
He also said that some principals who had applied for service extensions, are alleged of committing various offenses. Prof. Perera said that an investigation is underway after a stash of 95 bank notes worth Rs. 5000 each was discovered when one principal’s room was cleaned out.
