Today (22) marks the ‘Nikini’ Full Moon poya day.
Several important events in Buddhist history took place on this holy day. These events include the first ‘Dhamma Sangayana’ of Buddhist monks, Ananda Maha Thera attaining enlightenment and the commencement of the Vas season.
The day also holds cultural importance in Sri Lanka as the annual Kandy Esala Perahera also ends on this day.
Despite the island wide quarantine curfew, special permission has been granted to hold the Perahera, which featured around 5,600 artistes this year.
The festival commenced on Aug. 09 with the ‘Kap Situweema’ ceremony, and the final Randoli Perahera will be held tonight. The festival will conclude tomorrow following the ‘water cutting’ (Diya Kepeema) ceremony.
However, in consideration of the prevailing Covid-19 situation, the public was not allowed to attend the festival, which went live on TV and online instead.
