Nivunhella authorised to instruct all District Secretaries

The Secretary to the President stated that as per Section 5 of the Public Security Ordinance, the Essential Services Commissioner General has the authority to give directives to all relevant public officials, including District Secretaries.

The Government Information Department was replying to a statement made in parliament by the opposition yesterday (6) whereby it was stated that the Essential Services Commissioner General has no power to give directions to District Secretaries.

The Information further said that the opposition statement was misleading the public.

Essential Services Commissioner General, Major General Senerath Nivunhella on 5 September instructed District Secretaries and the Inspector General of Police to take measures to sell essential goods that have been stored illegally, at a reasonable rate to the general public.
