Opposition parties protest against KNDU Bill

Aug 05, Colombo: A number of protest rallies organized by several political parties as well as a number of civil society organizations under the theme ‘Let’s defeat the Kotelawala Defense University Bill and oppose the militarization of education’ were held near the Lipton Roundabout in Colombo this evening (05).
Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa and several other parliamentarians of the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) were present at the protest.
MP Vijitha Herath, MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, former MP Dr. Nalinda Jayathissa and others were present at the protest representing the National People’s Power (NPP).
An organization called the 43 Senankaya led by Member of Parliament Patali Champika Ranawaka held a protest near the Baptist Church near Lipton Roundabout. Former Provincial Councilor Keerthi Sri Warnasinghe, former Deputy Minister Karunaratne Paranavithana and many other active members of the 43 Senanayake were also present.
The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) also staged a protest near the Lipton Roundabout against the Kotelawala Defense University Bill. Members of the academic staff of the University, including professors, were present at the event.
In addition, the Workers Struggle Center also staged a protest this evening. Pubudu Jayagoda and many other activists of the Center were present at the protest.
The protests also caused traffic congestion near the Town Hall Lipton Roundabout. Heavy police presence was seen as well as several Colombo Municipal Council public health inspectors watching the protests closely.
